Waiuku Skatepark near Pukekohe: Community-Built Extension at Massey Park

Last updated October 2026

Waiuku’s skatepark has a problem most parks don’t: the original layout ran downhill. Waiuku Skatepark sits on the Queen Street edge of Massey Park in Waiuku, west of Pukekohe, and a 2018 extension added new levels to fix that slope while bringing in fresh features.

Riders now get a mini ramp bowl with transfers, a rising quarterpipe, a W rail, ledges, a bank to ledge and a manual pad.

The upgrade was planned, paid for and partly built by the community, with the Waiuku Lions Club and local skate and scooter riders working alongside the Franklin Local Board. Massey Park around it adds toilets, a playground, a basketball court and a barbecue.

About Waiuku Skatepark

The first skatepark here went in around the turn of the century, according to RICH Landscapes, which designed the later extension. Its flow ran downhill, so the 2018 work set new levels to even things out and placed the new features where they would link the old and new areas.

The extension brought a rising quarterpipe, a quarterpipe extension with diamond grind coping, a transitioned bank to ledge, more ledges and a new manual pad, and the older section was given a resurfacing grind to tidy its surface and edges.

Photos from the designer also show a W rail running into the rising quarter, kickers, a small grind box and the original mini ramp bowl with transfers.

Auckland Council’s OurAuckland news site reported the project as a $100,000 community effort. The Franklin Local Board, the Waiuku Lions Club and a group of skate and scooter riders planned, funded and built it together, and the reopening ceremony was held at the park on 27 May 2018.

Local board member Brendon Crompton said Waiuku had embraced the idea of empowered communities more than any other place in Auckland.
