Hamiltons Gap Fishing: Drone and Kontiki Fishing on Āwhitu

Sea fishing rules: Auckland and Kermadec (Auckland West). No licence needed. Size limits, daily limits and closures apply and change. Check the rules before you go.

Last updated October 2026

Hamiltons Gap is a break in the high dunes on the Tasman side of the Āwhitu Peninsula, where West Coast Road ends beside a stream and a black-sand beach.

Drone and kontiki fishing are popular here, sending baited longlines out beyond the breakers. It is an exposed coast with powerful surf and weather that can turn quickly, so it rewards a settled day.

More About Hamiltons Gap

From Waiuku, Āwhitu Road heads north up the peninsula, and West Coast Road branches off it to the west, dropping down a valley to the coast. It stops on a grassy flat beside the stream, where there is a car park, toilets and a designated freedom camping area. Self-contained campervans and tents fill it on summer weekends and over the holidays.

The stream runs out through the gap to the beach, and you have to cross it to reach the sand. It can be deep, so pick your spot. Where it meets the beach the stream forms a sandbar and lagoon, and dunes that rank among the highest in the region climb away on both sides.

Those dunes are nesting habitat for the New Zealand dotterel, or tūturiwhatu, a threatened shorebird. Gannets are often seen fishing offshore.

How to Fish Hamiltons Gap

Drones and kontiki

Many anglers who come here bring a drone or a motorised kontiki to run a longline out past the surf. MPI’s rules allow a set line with no more than 25 hooks, and every surface float has to carry your initials and surname, marked permanently. Keep the bait and gear above the high tide mark while you set up.

Surfcasting

At Karioitahi Beach, further south on the same coast, surfcasting for kahawai and snapper is popular, especially at dawn and dusk. Look for darker water between the sandbanks here and cast into it as the tide floods back.

Picking a day

This beach faces the open Tasman, so the surf can be powerful and the weather can change fast. A calm, settled day is the one to choose. If the swell is building, fish from the dry sand rather than wading, or come back another time.

Getting There and Facilities

  • Road: drive north from Waiuku on Āwhitu Road, then turn west onto West Coast Road and follow it to the end. The trip is about 29 km and takes around 30 minutes.
  • Parking and toilets: at the road end, beside the freedom camping area. There are no other buildings.
  • To the beach: cross the stream from the end of the road. It can be deep.
  • Supplies: stock up on bait, ice and food in Waiuku or Pukekohe before you go.
  • Nearby: for surfcasting further south on this coast, see our Sunset Beach fishing guide.

Rules and Safety

  • MPI’s Auckland and Kermadec rules apply. Snapper limits on this coast follow Auckland West, which differ from Auckland East. Check the NZ Fishing Rules app before you go.
  • No set netting. To protect Māui dolphins, MPI’s 2020 rules extended the west coast set net closure between Maunganui Bluff and the Waiwhakaiho River at New Plymouth out to 12 nautical miles offshore.
  • Set lines (drone, kontiki or longline): no more than 25 hooks, and your initials and surname permanently on every surface float.
  • Shellfish: this beach is inside MPI’s Auckland Coromandel area, which on the west coast runs from Muriwai Beach to the sandspit at Port Waikato, with lower daily limits for several species. Toheroa must not be taken, possessed or disturbed.
  • Dotterels nest in the dunes. During nesting season keep to the lower beach and stay off the dune face.
  • The surf can be powerful. If you swim, do it on an incoming tide, and keep children close.
