Last updated October 2026
The Whangamarino Historic Walk is a short walk off Oram Road near Meremere that takes in two key sites of the Waikato War: Te Teoteo’s Pā and the Whangamarino Redoubt.
DOC grades it Easy and gives 25 min, with a generally easy gradient and some stepped, steeper sections. It starts just across the Whangamarino River control gates and is part of Te Araroa.
When we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC had a long-term alert for the surrounding wetland: “Do not enter the wetland.” DOC says this protects the fragile peat bog as it recovers from the 2024 Whangamarino Wetland fire, so keep to the walk. It is about 18 km from Pukekohe.

About Whangamarino Historic Walk
From the gate across the river control gates, the track follows a mown path and marker posts through regenerating native bush of tree ferns, māhoe, mapou, hangehange and other shrubs. It climbs a grassy spur with views over the Waikato River and State Highway 1.
Near the top are the fortification ditches of Te Teoteo’s Pā, and a short distance further is the Whangamarino Redoubt. Information panels along the way explain the local history. The track then descends an old roadway used during the wars and comes out on Oram Road.
Waikato War History
DOC describes Te Teoteo’s Pā as an older Māori fortification that was reoccupied to block the British advance into the Waikato. British forces set up the Whangamarino Redoubt in August 1863 as a forward base for shelling Meremere, the first major Māori defensive position. Both are reminders of the Waikato War of 1863–64.
